OLEY, PA -- Who really rules the world now? Is it governments or a handful of huge, multinational companies? The wealth of American car giant Ford is worth more than the economy of South Africa. A handful of hugely rich men, like Bill Gates, have a wealth greater than most of Africa. Is there now an alliance between the superpowers of wealth, politics and military might?

THE NEW RULERS OF THE WORLD -- A Special Report by John Pilger takes the viewer behind the hype of the new 'global' economy, where the divisions between rich and poor have never been greater.

Two thirds of the world's children live in poverty. Half of Britain owns a mobile phone; half of humanity seldom makes a phone call. And the gulf is widening as never before. This is the open secret of 'globalisation' -- a new power with an old agenda.

The award-winning journalist and film-maker turns his attention to the new rulers of the world -- the great multinationals and the governments and institutions, such as the IMF and World Bank, that back them. The reality behind much of modern shopping and the famous brands is the loss of millions of jobs, and a sweatshop economy duplicated in country after country.

John Pilger takes the example of Indonesia, showing the conditions in which many of the famous brands we wear are made -- from sweatshop to British high streets. Indonesia is also a major client of the British arms industry and "model pupil" of the World Bank.

The film asks challenging questions, divulging scandals such as the World Bank "losing" up to $10 billion in Indonesia. John Pilger interviews top officials of the World Bank and the IMF.

"The received wisdom is that people these days are apathetic," says Pilger. "This film shows the opposite is true -- that across the world, millions are beginning to make their voices heard on the new economic order being imposed on them, especially young people.
