On 8 May, 2003, Dow Chemical will hold its Annual General Meeting for its shareholders in Midland, Michigan. Dow has withheld information regarding its potential liabilities in Bhopal, and other Dow-impacted communities from its shareholders. Two women survivors from Bhopal -- Rashida Bee and Champa Devi -- will visit the United States from April 22nd to May 31st to mobilise support for their campaign. They will launch a hunger strike on May 1 for justice for Bhopal.

In these two years, you made a tentative attempt to establish a dialogue with the survivor organisations from Bhopal. However, despite the magnitude of Union Carbide's crimes in Bhopal, and despite the gravity of the human rights and environmental disaster there, Dow Chemical has chosen to ignore its responsibilities in Bhopal. In these two years, more than 15 persons have died every month. Union Carbide's toxic wastes, now the responsibility of Dow Chemical, have continued to poison the environment. More evidence has been brought to fore about the continuing effects of Carbide's gases, and of the plight of those forced to drink poisoned water. </p> <p>Dow is now party to the crime in Bhopal. Two years and two years' worth of lives have been wasted. Your promises of sustainable development, "responsible care" and "zero harm" ring hollow. </p> <p>Survivors from Bhopal are now in the United States on an indefinite hunger strike. I am in full support of the hunger strike, and demand that Dow Chemical immediately take steps to end their fast by conceding to their demands, which are: </p> <p>1.Face Trial: Ensure that prime accused Warren Anderson, former chairman of Union Carbide ceases absconding from criminal justice in India and the authorized representatives of the company [Dow-Union Carbide] face trial in the Bhopal criminal court. </p> <p>2.Provide long term health care: Assume responsibility for the continuing and long term health consequences among the exposed persons and potentially their future generations. This includes medical care, health monitoring and necessary research studies. The company must provide all information on the leaked gases and their medical consequences. </p> <p>3.Clean up the poison: Remove the contamination of the ground water and soil in and around the abandoned Union Carbide factory in Bhopal. Provide for supply of safe drinking water to the community. </p> <p>4.Provide Economic and social support: The corporation must provide income opportunities to victims who can not pursue their usual trade as a result of exposure induced illnesses and income support to families rendered destitute due to death or incapacitation of the breadwinner of the family. </p> <p>Sincerely,</p>
