Research Tips

Tip 1: Be Critical

Is your information source credible? What is its bias? If possible, verify the information elsewhere.

Tip 2: Get Familiar with Your Research Resources

For example, if you are researching a corporation, take the time to explore the information on its Web site. Use the site map or search the site if you aren't sure where to look. The corporation may organize its information in an unusual way, or it may reveal very little information to the public. Knowing the corporation's approach to information can help you strategize your research more effectively.

Tip 3: Stay Focused

Make sure you stay on track. At the same time but be on the look-out for useful information as you do your research. Its possible the corporation will answer a question you hadn't thought of asking.

Tip 4: Document Your Sources

Print and/or bookmark any document that seems useful as you go. It's faster to take it and get rid of it later, than to retrace your steps. If the page you print doesn't include author (i.e., the company) or date, write this information on the document, so you can cite the correct source if anyone challenges your research. When redistributing materials, be sure to include the source and date.
